If you’re moving to Lincoln it’s likely that you’re currently trying to fit your entire life into some cardboard boxes—and it’s probably not as easy as you’d like it to be. We know that packing isn’t always the easiest moving task, which is why we offer expert packing services. But today we wanted to share some of our favorite packing tips for anyone looking to pack for themselves.
As a moving company in Lincoln, we’ve packed thousands of boxes for hundreds of happy customers, but we have learned a lot along the way. Keep reading to learn our favorite tips and tricks for packing like a pro.
Reduce, Reduce, Reduce
The best packing tip we can give our customers is to do an inventory before they start packing. Knowing what you need to pack will not only help you know how big of a moving truck to get, but also what materials you’ll need in order to pack. When you’re doing your inventory we suggest getting rid of whatever you can. If you wait until the last minute to pack you might end up packing stuff you don’t even need so try to donate, recycle or throw out anything you won’t need in your new home.
Borrow or buy the right materials
Now that you know what you have to pack, it’s essential you have the right moving materials. You don’t want your grandmother’s china breaking in a poorly padded box. We suggest using packing paper and bubble wrap, but linens and hand towels work great too.
We also suggest getting different sized boxes for all of your needs. Wardrobe boxes and TV boxes could also be a good idea. If you don’t know where to start, we’d be happy to help. Auburn Moving & Storage also offers packing supplies for customers who want to pack their own items. We carry a full line of regular and specialty boxes that will fit virtually any need.
If you want to try to save money on packing materials, try looking on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for used boxes or asking your local liquor store, which tend to have clean, sturdy boxes. Just make sure any previously used boxes aren’t damaged. You can also make use of the baskets and bins you already have.
Pack important items in a clear container
It can be easy to misplace things while moving when everything is in a similar looking cardboard box. We suggest packing important items like tax documents, home sale/buying documents, and employment records in a clear container so that you can keep track of them at all times.
Pack a special box for moving day
If you’ve ever moved before you know it can be exhausting. When you finally get settled in at the end of a long day, you won’t want to be digging through multiple boxes to find your toothbrush and your shower gel. We suggest putting all of your toiletries, medicines and other personal items into a special box or suitcase so that it’s all right there with you once you move to your new home in Lincoln.
Color code and label each box
The better you pack, the easier it’ll be to unpack. We know it takes a little more work on the frontend, but the easier it is for your movers to know where everything goes, the more smoothly your move will go. Most people know to label each box with the name of where the box belongs, but by using color coding, things will go much more quickly.
